Needle first appears in A Game of Thrones when Jon Snow gives the sword to Arya before leaving Winterfell for the Night’s Watch.

Knowing that Arya has little interest in becoming the traditional noble lady expected by Westerosi society, Jon secretly has the weapon made for her by Winterfell’s blacksmith Mikken.

The name comes from a joke between the siblings. Arya dislikes sewing and other activities considered suitable for highborn girls, so she names her blade Needle. If she has to do “needlework”, she will do it her own way.
