- Level 2: Cunning Action
- Level 3: Assassin subclass
Once you reach Level 3, the build really comes alive. Hide before combat, attack from stealth, and enjoy the sight of an enemy immediately regretting every decision that led them to this point.
Levels 4-8
- Level 4: +2 Dexterity or the Alert feat
- Level 5: Uncanny Dodge
- Level 6: More Expertise
- Level 7: Evasion
- Level 8: Dexterity 20 or Savage Attacker
The best feat is usually Alert.
Alert gives +5 initiative, which almost guarantees you go first. For an Assassin Rogue, going first is the whole point. It is rather hard to ambush somebody after they have already stabbed you.
Best Multiclass Rogue Build
The strongest version of this build is Rogue 7 / Ranger 5.
Specifically:
- Rogue 7, Assassin
- Ranger 5, Gloom Stalker
Gloom Stalker is absurdly strong with Assassin.
You gain:
- Extra Attack
- Dread Ambusher for another first-turn attack
- More initiative bonuses
- Hunter’s Mark
- Better ranged combat
The combination is genuinely ridiculous. You can begin combat with multiple attacks, each with advantage, many of them critical hits if the enemy is surprised. There are bosses in Act 3 who have carefully written dialogue and complicated mechanics. This build politely ignores all of that.
A typical opening turn looks like this:
- Attack from stealth
- Trigger Sneak Attack critical hit
- Gain extra Gloom Stalker attack
- Use Extra Attack
- Potentially attack again with an off-hand weapon
At that point, most enemies are either dead or having a very bad day.
Best Weapons for a Rogue
The best weapon setup depends on whether you prefer melee or ranged.

Dual wielding works extremely well with Thief or multiclass builds because you can stack extra attacks and Sneak Attack damage.

- Helldusk Gloves
- Disintegrating Night Walkers
These items boost stealth, initiative, survivability, and damage. Armour of Agility is especially good because it lets your Dexterity do most of the work while still giving excellent protection.
Best Rogue Party Composition
A Rogue works best when paired with companions who can support stealth or lock enemies down.
Good companions include:
- Shadowheart for buffs and healing
- Lae’zel as a front-line distraction
- Gale for crowd control
- Astarion if you want two Rogues and an entirely unreasonable amount of lockpicking
Two Rogues in one party is not efficient. It is not sensible. It is, however, extremely funny.
