LARP combat can produce huge, colourful battles filled with shield walls, archers, healers and heroes making questionable decisions with two-handed axes. It can also teach useful lessons about reach, formation discipline, fatigue and the unpleasant experience of being outflanked.
What it cannot do is reproduce a real medieval battle.
That is not a failure. LARP weapons and combat rules are designed to let hundreds of people fight without producing hundreds of casualties. The trouble begins when footage from a LARP battle is treated as evidence for how historical weapons performed.
Remove thrusting, grappling, shield strikes, powerful blows and attacks to vulnerable parts of the body, and the balance between weapons changes completely. A foam sword may resemble a medieval sword, but it exists in a different tactical ecosystem.
This raises a fascinating question: once safety rules rewrite the laws of combat, which weapons and tactics come out on top?
LARP Combat Is Not One System
Before sharpening the criticism, it is worth recognising that “LARP combat” covers several distinct traditions.
Some British games use relatively light contact, hit points and character abilities. Other systems use location-based damage, where an arm or leg becomes unusable when struck. American battle games may permit harder blows, shield checks and controlled grappling. Some European events prioritise dramatic reactions and visual storytelling over competitive efficiency.
Rules also change between organisers. For example, Empire permits thrusting with approved thrust-safe polearms and pikes, while its pikes may only be used to thrust. It prohibits shield barging, weapon grabbing and uncontrolled rapid striking. Curious Pastimes forbids shield barging and gives arrows specific game effects. There is no universal answer to the best LARP weapon. There is only the best weapon within a particular ruleset.

Most LARP systems restrict some combination of the following:

- Blows to the head, neck, hands and groin

How the Absence of Thrusting Changes a Battle
Thrusting is one of the most important differences between many LARP systems and historical combat.
The point of a sword, spear or polearm threatens the opponent along the shortest line between the two fighters. A thrust can be delivered from behind a shield, through a narrow opening or from the second rank of a formation. It requires comparatively little room and gives the defender a direct problem: there is a point travelling towards the face, throat or torso.
When thrusting is prohibited, several things happen.
Weapon reach becomes less honest
A spear that can only be swung has impressive reach but must travel through a broad arc. The attack becomes easier to see and requires more space between friendly combatants.

Within that environment, the large shield, fast one-handed weapon and supporting polearm tend to reign supreme. Add safe thrusting and the spear returns to prominence. Permit shield checks and grappling, and the battle changes again.
LARP combat is best understood as its own martial game. It borrows the appearance of historical warfare, then builds a safer and rather stranger set of physical laws beneath it.
That is not an insult. Frankly, medieval warfare could have benefited from better event management.
