Ghost of Yōtei Best Weapons: Every Weapon Ranked

Ghost of Yōtei Best Weapons

Atsu carries enough steel to make travelling light a fairly loose concept. Choosing what to use is harder than admiring the collection.

The katana is my pick for the best weapon to master first. The kusarigama takes the top spot for versatility, while dual katana are the strongest recommendation against spear users. Those answers differ because Yōtei rewards the right weapon for the opponent in front of you.

This guide ranks the original campaign’s five melee weapon types, then its four main ranged weapons. Quickfire tools get their own recommendations. Rankings reflect practical usefulness and ease of learning, rather than a measured damage leaderboard. Legends and expansion-specific equipment need separate comparisons.

Ghost of Yōtei weapon rankings at a glance

A lower position means a more specialised recommendation, not equipment you should leave gathering dust.

Melee rankWeaponMain reason to use it
1KusarigamaCrowd control and shield breaking
2KatanaBalanced sword combat
3Dual katanaPressure against spear users
4ŌdachiHeavy-enemy encounters
5YariReach and sickle-enemy counters

These enemy matchups follow PlayStation’s official combat guide. The order is an editorial judgement: a weapon’s correct matchup should always take priority over its place in a ranking.

1. Kusarigama: Best for versatility

The kusarigama earns first place because it answers two awkward problems: groups and shields. Its chain-and-sickle design brings reach and control to encounters where standing still and trading cuts is a questionable life choice.

That combination makes it an appealing weapon to learn early once available. My reasoning is simple: tools that help manage the shape of a fight are valuable even before you start optimising a build.

Its position does come with a condition. Learning a distinctive weapon takes patience. Do not expect the chain to compensate for poor positioning or an attack launched while somebody behind you is preparing a very firm objection.

Choose it when: shields or crowded encounters are making your usual sword approach uncomfortable.

Ranking verdict: The strongest recommendation for players who value options over familiarity.

2. Katana: Best weapon to master first

The katana’s appeal is clarity. It is balanced and suited to fighting sword users, giving you a sensible foundation before you spread your attention across the rest of the arsenal.

I would put learning its rhythm ahead of chasing elaborate combinations. Reading an attack, defending correctly and recognising an opening will serve you throughout the game. Looking magnificent for half a second before being flattened is a less transferable skill.

Second place should not be read as an instruction to abandon it. For players who prefer deliberate sword combat, the katana could reasonably be their personal number one.

Choose it when: facing sword users or concentrating on the fundamentals.

Ranking verdict: The safest starting point for building confidence.

3. Dual Katana: Best against spear users

Dual katana offer fast combinations and a clear counter to spear enemies. They suit players who enjoy applying pressure once an opening appears.

The important phrase there is “once an opening appears”. Two swords can encourage the understandable but expensive belief that attacking twice as enthusiastically will solve everything.

Their third-place position reflects a narrower recommendation than the first two weapons. Against the appropriate opponent, however, reaching for them is more useful than stubbornly defending a tier list.

Choose them when: spear users are controlling the encounter.

Ranking verdict: A strong specialist choice for an aggressive approach.

4. Ōdachi: Best against heavy enemies

The ōdachi is the heavy weapon in Atsu’s melee selection, built to counter heavy enemies. It also delivers the visual satisfaction of bringing an appropriately large sword to an appropriately large problem.

I would treat it as a weapon for purposeful decisions. Identify the threat, create your opening and make the attack count. The attraction is impact, rather than the temptation to keep pressing buttons because the animation looks excellent.

Fourth place reflects its specialist role. If a heavy enemy is your immediate problem, the ōdachi belongs at the top of your priorities.

Choose it when: fighting heavy enemies.

Ranking verdict: Essential for its intended matchup, rather than the first recommendation for every encounter.

5. Yari: Best for reach and sickle counters

The yari offers reach, interruption and a counter to sickle-wielding enemies. There is a straightforward attraction here: making somebody deal with the sharp end of a spear before they reach you.

Its last-place position is the most dependent on personal preference. Players who enjoy managing distance could easily move it higher. A deliberate approach to spacing deserves more credit than weapon rankings sometimes give it.

My recommendation is to learn its role rather than dismiss it. The fifth weapon in a useful arsenal remains useful.

Choose it when: facing sickle users or favouring distance control.

Ranking verdict: A specialist worth practising, particularly if close-range sword exchanges feel cramped.

Best ranged weapons in Ghost of Yōtei

The main ranged choices are the hankyū shortbow, yumi longbow, tanegashima matchlock rifle and tanzutsu pistol.

For general campaign use, I would prioritise familiarity with a bow before making firearms the centre of your approach. That is a recommendation about flexibility, not a claim that bows win every damage comparison.

Ranged rankWeaponRecommended role
1Hankyū shortbowYour regular bow option
2Yumi longbowA dedicated archery approach
3Tanegashima matchlockHigh-impact shots
4Tanzutsu pistolA supplementary firearm option

The two bows deserve to be considered together. Experiment with both before committing to upgrades or a particular archery build. The best choice is the one whose use fits your approach to encounters.

The tanegashima is the recommendation when you specifically want a powerful firearm shot. The tanzutsu sits lower here because I would prioritise learning the broader ranged toolkit first. Fourth place is not a judgement on how satisfying a pistol can look. Cinema has already made its case.

Best quickfire tools and supporting builds

Kunai are a sensible first quickfire recommendation. Smoke bombs and blinding metsubushi deserve attention when your priority is recovering control of an encounter.

Equipment choices can strengthen these roles. PlayStation’s official builds guide describes a flaming-kunai setup using Nine Tail Armour and supporting charms. It also outlines a Dragonfly Armour archery build, including timed empowered shots and improvements to Concentration.

For melee players, Armour of the Undying is particularly relevant because several of its benefits depend on being weapon-aligned. That makes switching equipment for the correct opponent part of the build’s function, rather than optional tidiness.

These examples are useful starting points. Pick a benefit you actually intend to use, then build around it. A collection of impressive descriptions is less helpful if none supports the way you fight.

How to choose the best weapon for each fight

Start with the enemy’s equipment. Then consider the space around you and whether other opponents can interrupt your attack.

Enemy typeRecommended melee weapon
Sword userKatana
Spear userDual katana
Heavy enemyŌdachi
Sickle userYari
Shield userKusarigama

Practise switching during ordinary encounters before depending on it in a difficult fight. A favourite weapon is useful; being comfortable with the others gives you somewhere to go when that favourite meets an awkward opponent.

For progression, follow weapon training and develop techniques at Altars of Reflection. I would prioritise understanding each weapon’s basic role before chasing a highly specialised setup.

Which Ghost of Yōtei weapon should you use?

Learn the katana first, make the kusarigama your versatility pick, and keep the other three melee weapons ready for their matchups.

That is the most useful way to read this ranking. The kusarigama wins on breadth, but the enemy in front of Atsu gets the deciding vote.

I like a weapon system that gives the whole collection a reason to exist. It makes experimenting worthwhile, and it prevents a beautifully designed spear from becoming an unusually expensive item of luggage.
