When Merlin first aired in 2008, it reimagined the Arthurian legends for a new generation, combining fantasy adventure with character-driven storytelling. Over five series, it became a staple of Saturday night television, introducing a talented cast who have since gone on to varied careers in film, television, and theatre. Here is where the main cast are today.
Colin Morgan (Merlin)
Colin Morgan’s portrayal of the young warlock was central to the show’s charm. Since the series ended in 2012, he has built a strong career in television drama and theatre. His TV work includes roles in Humans, The Fall, The Living and the Dead, and We Hunt Together. On stage, he has performed in productions such as Translations at the National Theatre. Morgan has also appeared in films including Testament of Youth and Benjamin.
Bradley James (Arthur Pendragon)
As King Arthur, Bradley James brought a mix of arrogance and honour that grew into a more complex hero over time. After Merlin, he took on the lead role in the historical drama Damien, played Giuliano de’ Medici in Medici: The Magnificent, and appeared in the crime series Underworld: Blood Wars. More recently, he starred in The Liberator and Bounty Hunters.
Katie McGrath (Morgana Pendragon)
Katie McGrath’s transformation from loyal ward to powerful adversary was one of the show’s most memorable arcs. She went on to appear in Dracula, Slasher, and as Lena Luthor in Supergirl, a role she played for several years. Her film credits include Jurassic World and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Angel Coulby (Guinevere “Gwen”)
After portraying Gwen, who rose from servant to queen, Angel Coulby continued to work in television, notably starring in The Tunnel, Dancing on the Edge, and Innocent. She has also taken roles in theatre, including the West End production of Good People. Coulby remains selective with her projects, often gravitating towards character-driven drama.
Richard Wilson (Gaius)
Veteran actor Richard Wilson brought warmth and humour to the role of Camelot’s court physician. Since Merlin, he has appeared in guest roles on various television programmes and continued his work in theatre. Best known to earlier audiences for One Foot in the Grave, Wilson has also been involved in directing and supporting new talent in the industry.
Anthony Head (Uther Pendragon)
Already well known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Anthony Head gave Uther a commanding presence. Post-Merlin, he has acted in Dominion, Guilt, Ted Lasso, and appeared in numerous stage productions. His career remains diverse, covering drama, comedy, and voice work.
John Hurt (The Great Dragon)
The late Sir John Hurt lent his distinctive voice to the Great Dragon, giving the character a sense of gravitas. Following Merlin, he continued his celebrated film and television career, appearing in Doctor Who, Snowpiercer, and Jackie before his passing in 2017. His contribution to British acting remains highly regarded.
A Legacy Beyond the Screen
While Merlin concluded over a decade ago, the series retains a loyal fan base and continues to find new viewers through streaming platforms. The cast have each carved out distinctive paths, taking on challenging roles and expanding their repertoires. Their post-Merlin work reflects the versatility that first drew audiences to Camelot’s reimagined court.
