Nioh
The Nioh series is a pair of action role-playing games developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. Set in a supernatural version of Sengoku-era Japan, the games combine fast-paced melee combat with deep RPG systems, heavily influenced by Japanese history, folklore, and samurai cinema. Players take on the role of skilled warriors navigating war-torn landscapes filled with deadly enemies, vengeful spirits, and mythical yokai.
The original Nioh launched in 2017 after a long and turbulent development cycle. Its blend of punishing combat and historical fantasy drew comparisons to Dark Souls, yet Nioh carved out its own identity through its stance-based combat, ki management system, and emphasis on loot and build variety. Nioh 2, released in 2020, refined and expanded the formula while introducing character customisation and yokai powers. Together, the games offer a brutal but rewarding experience for players seeking tactical depth and atmospheric worldbuilding.
